There are currently two independent public inquiry commissions in Québec concerning Indigenous peoples.
National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
At the federal level, the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls is a public inquiry seeking to produce a report on the systemic causes of violence against Indigenous women and girls. The historical, social, economic, institutional and cultural factors will be examined. The Commission will examine practices, policies and institutions such as policing, child welfare, coroners and other government policies and practices. Victims’ families will be met to collect information with a view to enlightening the Commissioners about the phenomenon of violence against Indigenous women, in respect for Indigenous traditions.
At the end of its mandate, which should conclude no later than December 31, 2018, the Commission will have to issue recommendations on concrete measures to be taken to eliminate the systemic causes of violence against women and increase the safety of Québec Indigenous women and girls.
